Different perspectives of Feminism:
No.1
"I feel feminism was required at one point of time in this country, and was started with intention of fostering 'gender equality'. To that end, I feel that it is good. Whether they are liberated in 2008, seems to be a matter of debate (more than a discussion). Waves and waves of activity has brought people to this century, but still people do have their 'view' of feminism. Not to be seen as nit picking, but what's with people here saying 'Lots of people will lie to you--they'll tell you it's about man-hating or giving women superiority, but that's all lies.' I m sure a normal woman would not say that until she has screwed up ideas about feminism in the first place. Of course men would NEVER say that and open up a pandora's box in the men's lodge."
No.2
"I must be very old-fashioned. I believe in equality but also in respect. By the way, I am male. I open doors for ladies. I turn away when a lady is getting into or out of a car. I offer to help carry heavy things and am rarely refused the opportunity to make myself feel masculine and important. If I am dining with a lady, I pay for the meal. I have worked with many battered women, and feel contempt for the batterers. I also feel contempt for the feminazis, who have caused a horrible backlash which has made life more difficult for many women."
I realized that you copied and pasted these perspectives from Yahoo Answers ( https://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080114073338AANuYmo ) word for word. The homework was, of course, to come up with your OWN account -- which could have been BASED ON something that you researched. There would be no point to just repeating something from a Website verbatim.
ReplyDeleteFeminism is a matter that I have never touched so deeply before. I am sure that the discrimination against women have eased than before but women are still struggling to get their proper status in the society concerning employments, promotions, salaries and so on. Especially in developing countries, I have an impression that there is a clear gap between men and women. In my opinion, there should not be an exact role determined from the beginning. It could be said in from the opposite aspect like women-only train in Japan. I have seen some movements of women claiming for their rights but are there any movements of men trying to support women for their rights?

I find feminism to be a very complicated topic. I have always had issues ever since i could remember about sexism. For example, when i was working on a project to build something, someone would tell me that I should ask my father or one of my male friends to help out to get it done faster, or simply when I was playing sports with a group of people and someone would not want to choose me and instead choose a boy because "Boys are better at sports". But that being said, when it comes to the way men and women think we contrast with each other in uncountable ways, like how when women are upset, the majority of women prefer to be listened to and the majority of men when upset, would like to have some time to themselves. Because we have these different personality traits it makes it hard to just tell men and women to treat each other the same. But I do believe that we need to find a balance in this area.
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult to take some approches to femnism. If the society becomes too kind to women, tehn it becomes the discrimination toward men. Of course there are many charactristics only women have, especially like pregnancy, and we have to take care them. However, in my opinion, basically we should not distinguish people based on not gender but charactristics each person has. There are strong women and week men around the world. If the society sets rule only thinking about the difference between men and women, many people will have troubles, although of course the discrimination toward women must be totally disappeared.

These days, more and more people take the problem of Feminism seriously. Many women persist on their miserable experiences. However, fortunately, I've never experienced excessive sex discrimination so far. Men around me are really polite. For example, when I carry very heavy things they always help me.
ReplyDeleteMany people say that women should have more opportunity to promote and get equal pay. I really do agree with this. I'm sure that many women have a power and a knowledge to work. However, the more they tried to deal with it, the more problem we find. There are difficulties which we can't solve, because men and women are different biologically. In these days, I felt men are put in a delicate position. We should admit the differences and possibly make equal situations.
Feminism is a problem that many people, the government, and many countries have been working hard on. I learned on the Internet that feminism movements started in the 17th century. This is a very long time ago, and we can see clearly that this is a delicate and difficult problem. I didn't know that there weren't any rights for women to vote for an election, or have equal education. Women even had birth control, so they did not have the freedom to have children, or not have children. In Japan, these rights have become an ordinary thing. However, in developing countries, they still do not have equal rights for women. They are seen only as a tool for housing or having children, and I think this is unacceptable. We are all human beings, so we must all have equal rights, not depending on their gender. Nowadays, most of us have internet access, so I think that we must let many people know what is going on in other countries. I hope gender equality would come for everyone.
ReplyDeleteTo tell the truth, I didn't exactly understand the difference between feminism and gender equality before your presentation. I think that the first problem about feminism is that there are many people (at least I hope so) like me who do not undertand the difference. I hope NGOs like yours will increase, especially which young people take part in it. I thought that Emma Watson's speech was amazing and I hope it spreads to people who do not know that problems about feminism still exists.
ReplyDeleteI have never thought about Feminism deeply, and I didn’t know that the meaning of Feminism. I often hear that woman couldn’t get the more chance to promote and get equal pay. Many companies and the government try to Feminism. For example, most companies adopt maternity leave or child-care leave system. However the stereotype that women should do a lot of housework remains deeply, so it is hard to make gender equality. I hope Feminism movement become more popular and the society that is gender equality. And then I think it is also important not to make light of man rights.
ReplyDeleteI think that feminism is a good topic because women should protect their right. Like FEMEN, a radical group of feminists, there are women who fight against the society that men have priority. I don’t want to be naked to get such freedom for us, women but I think every women have to realize that we have less right of free than men. Feminism is paid relatively little attention especially in Japan, so feminists have to be showy. Whether we agree or not agree, we should have open mind to hear the opinions they have. In this point, I think feminism is like same-sex marriage.
ReplyDeleteYour topic is a little close to our topic, same-sex marriage. Recently, women also go into society, politics and so on. And they are suffered for some reason. For example, their salary is lower than man or their right is restricted. In spite of this, only few people recognize this problem. I hadn’t heard about NGO of feminism ever before. But I think they should be respected more. Their human right is important. So I think it’s the most important to make more and more people understand and think about this problem. I hope more people accept freedom of women.
ReplyDeleteI've never deeply thought about feminism before the presentation and I believe this is something many people feel since there isn’t much opportunity to be a part of it.
ReplyDeleteAs a female and as a human, I believe that this topic is something we have to consider in our society. I personally liked watching Emma Watson’s speech and it actually made me realize that this is something many people want to be known. I think like her, and like this NGO, we need some actions and I hope more and more people will get to know about it.
Your topic is interesting. I think we should protect more women's right. Women feel unpleasant in daily life, for example sexual harassment. This is serious problem. I watched on TV that media reported an incident at the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly in which a female member was heckled. Some one said in meeting that Shiomura, who is female politician, should hurry up and get married rather than ask such questions. I was shocked that even in a politic place, women's right is ignored. Every person should be equal regardless of sex, religion, national origin, and so on.
